Fall Tree Cut Out

Fall tree maintenance is an important task that should be undertaken annually, or more regularly if the tree is a shade tree. While pruning trees in the fall can correct growth that is beyond the tree's ability to handle, it should be done with precaution. Pruning is a process that is highly critical to maintaining a healthy and strong tree, and should only be attempted when the tree is in good shape and ready for it. If pruning is done too early in the season, the tree may not be ready for it. In addition to being dangerous, it could damage the already weak wood on the branch.

The best time to perform this crucial job is late in the fall, when the sap is low and the tree is dormant. If there are dead branches, debris, or other unsightly messes on the area, clean them up prior to pruning, otherwise they will only cause more problems later. To inspect the entire fall area, use your hand to feel the branches and check for any weak areas or knots. You should also examine the root ball and take a look at the soil surrounding the tree.

Identifying weak areas is a good way to avoid having to make an incision in the tree during the trimming process. Simply find the weak section of branch and bend it around to identify its location. Once you have located the weak area, cut off about a quarter-inch of branch away from where you want to cut. The purpose of this is to allow for the new growth to run down the branch and create a stronger attachment. This will result in a smaller wound in the tree, which won't take as long to heal.

After the cut, carefully reattach the branch. Be sure that you don't cut too much off or else the new growth will begin to spread under the tree and cause more problems. If you do decide to make another incision into the tree, make it at the base of the branch and follow it with a cut across the branch below it. Be sure that you get a nice even cut with no spaces in between.

After you're done with your work, be sure to keep branches from growing back into the weakened area. Trim any overhanging branches off with your saw. Then apply some insecticide spray to help control the population of pests. Continue to inspect your tree for signs of decay and wither. Small holes or decay will soon appear around the branches, but be patient and continue to work on the tree.

Fall tree care isn't always easy to complete. However, your efforts will certainly pay off when the tree starts to die back. Remember to be patient and steady. Don't give up until the tree has fallen completely. Also, don't wait for the right conditions to appear before you take action to protect your precious fall foliage.
